What is a Metals & Minerals Scan? (aka Oligoscan)
The Oligoscan is a quick and non-invasive test to detect heavy metals and minerals. It specifically measures intracellular levels but not those stored in deeper tissues such as fat and bone.
How does the Oligoscan work?
The Oligoscan works by accurately measuring trace minerals and heavy metals in your tissues through high‑frequency light spectrophotometry. No hair, tissue, blood or urine samples are required. The Oligoscan measures the wavelength of light absorbed at four spots on the palm of the hand and therefore identifies levels of metals and minerals. As each heavy metal and mineral absorbs light at a different wavelength, each has its own identifier.
In traditional Far Eastern Medicine the hands and feet are sites of detoxification and therefore Oligoscan is a good measure of whether your heavy metals are being mobilised for elimination.
The body tries to keep levels of minerals and metals at a constant level in the blood by moving them in and out of tissues. That’s why a blood test for minerals does not necessarily show levels in tissues (including organs). Urine tests only measure what the body is capable of eliminating, and hair tests measure levels from weeks or even months ago. The accurate and precise results from an Oligoscan measures your current state of health, so you make immediate decisions and actions to improve your health.

What metals and minerals are being tested?

If your mineral levels come back as low, your Qualified Practitioner will advise on how to increase your intakes of specific mineral rich foods or recommend pharmaceutical grade supplements.
Most people will have heavy metal toxicity to some degree. A high level on Oligoscan in a ‘healthy’ person – i.e. one with no symptoms or illness is likely because metals are being mobilised for elimination from the body.
Your Qualified Practitioner will help you to identify and eliminate your potential exposures (occupation, foods, water, pollution, etc), as well as advise on increasing your intake of foods which support detoxification pathways in the body including those that promote healing of the intestinal barrier, correcting abnormal gut bacteria and reducing gut inflammation.
Why are my Metal & Mineral levels important?
Heavy metals are highly toxic to the body by binding to proteins and altering their structure and function. In addition, they lead to inflammation and oxidative stress in tissues.
Minerals are required by the body to build all tissues such as bone and other organs, but also to act as co-factors for almost every biochemical reaction.
Heavy metal toxicity can deplete the body’s essential minerals and displace vital nutrients required for normal physiology. The most common nutrients displaced are zinc and iodine by copper and mercury respectively.
Many nutrients have relationships with others and compete for binding sites, where both minerals are needed but in different amounts and locations. Zinc and copper are an example of this. Copper is needed for synthesis of collagen, blood vessels and brain development. Zinc is required for immune function, DNA transcription, hormonal function and synthesis of stomach acid.
Balance between copper and zinc is crucial for health. Mercury displaces iodine; an essential mineral for the formation of thyroid hormones- the master regulators of metabolism and cellular respiration. Other mineral pairs that are important include calcium/magnesium, calcium/phosphorus and sodium/potassium. An indication of sulpho-conjugation (removal of toxins via glutathione in the liver) is given by looking at sulphur levels.
The alkalinising minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium can also indicate potential latent acidosis which can affect normal physiology. Antioxidant mineral levels (Selenium, Manganese, Zinc) can indicate the need for antioxidant support.
